4 A MESSAGE FROM THE BIRMINGHAM BUSINESS ALLIANCE The Birmingham Business Alliance is proud to present this 2015 Regional Economic Growth Report, which highlights the Birmingham region’s economic growth and achievements during the past year. Here you will find the important metrics by which we measure our community’s progress, accolades and accomplishments relative to the BBA’s strategic growth plan, Blueprint Birmingham, and the official 2014 new and expanding industry report for the region. Last year 3,011 new jobs and more than $370 million in capital investment were announced in the Birmingham metropolitan area. It was a year of solid growth for our region. Most of the growth came from existing companies that utilized the resources available to them and took advantage of Birmingham’s excellent transportation infrastructure, low cost of doing business, exceptional collaboration and support, superior workforce, and a strong technology and innovation ecosystem. The 79 projects from new and expanding companies last year included the biotechnology, information technology, corporate, research and development, communications, manufacturing, transportation, mining, and distribution and logistics sectors, which collectively represent the diversity of the Birmingham regional economy. The metrics section of this report includes supporting data for Brian Hilson President and CEO Mark Crosswhite Chairman of the Board Chairman, President and CEO, Alabama Power Co. 15 performance categories, with Birmingham compared to 11 other metropolitan areas, Alabama and the U.S. Compared with the other metropolitan areas, Birmingham showed improvement in seven of the performance categories, while four were unchanged and four declined. Recently Forbes magazine ranked Birmingham America’s “Most Affordable City,” and Birmingham continues to have one of the best combinations of personal income and cost of living in the south. Congratulations to the businesses, communities and employees that were part of a successful 2014 in economic development.
